Chip-Tool Tracker: where the Netherlands ships chipmaking machines

The Netherlands is home to ASML, the only company on Earth that makes EUV lithography machines. Official trade data shows where its chipmaking equipment goes, every month — for free. As far as we have been able to find, nobody publishes it as a running series. So we do, with every limit of the data written down.

Does this actually track ASML?

A proxy is only worth publishing if it matches something we can check. ASML reports its sales by region once a year, so we compared. This series is shipments; ASML reports revenue, which is recognised on a different timetable, so a small gap is expected.

The largest gap is 1.8 points in 2025, and 4.6 points in 2024. Close enough to use as an early read on what ASML will later report — the series arrives with about a two-month lag, ASML’s regional split once a year.

What this data cannot tell you

It does not separate EUV from DUV. The customs code covers all machines for making semiconductors. Any statement about EUV specifically would be inference, and we will not print one as if it were measured.
It is not ASML alone. ASML dominates Dutch exports of this code, but other Dutch equipment makers ship under it too.
There is no count of machines. Eurostat records value and weight for this code, not units. We do not publish a “price per tool.”
Single months are lumpy. One machine can be worth hundreds of millions of euros; shipments to the US moved from €4m to €400m between October and December 2025. That is why the chart uses three-month sums.
It is not comparable to ASML’s 2026 China guidance. ASML expects China to be about 20% of its total 2026 sales, which includes servicing machines already installed in China. This series counts only new equipment shipped. Setting one against the other would compare two different things — the exact kind of error we have corrected on this site before — so we do not.
